Suppression Services

The suppression division of Alpharetta Fire responds to all 911 calls that involve fire events, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous materials, technical rescue, or any other incident where public safety is threatened. In addition, this division also responds to non-emergency requests for public assistance, such as water leaks, fallen trees, trapped or endangered animals, etc. In order to maintain a state of readiness, suppression personnel are required to annually complete a minimum of 240 hours of fire and rescue training and 36 hours of continuing education in emergency medical services. Most personnel far exceed these requirements.

The City of Alpharetta currently employees approximately 90 career firefighters that staff seven stations an average of 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365.25 days per year. Personnel are organized into three shifts, each of which works 24 hours and then has 48 hours off. Between the seven stations, there are 6 fire engines, 2 rescue units, and 1 ladder truck. Although the personnel that man these units are trained the same, each type of apparatus has a different function. The fire engine, or pumper, as it is sometimes known, has the primary responsibility for fire suppression and emergency medical services. The rescue units are quick response vehicles that are staffed with advanced life support capabilities, including cardiac care. Due to these credentials the rescue units are primarily responsible for critical medical emergencies. The equipment that the ladder truck carries differs from that of the engine, and is therefore, more suited to the tasks of rescue operations, defensive fire operations, and salvage. While each of these apparatus has its particular area of focus, a unit may find itself dealing with a variety of situations at any time.

When the men and women of the suppression division are not out on an emergency call their days are filled with training, hydrant inspections, station and vehicle maintenance, pre-incident planning, public education, static displays, community interaction, physical fitness, and many other activities.
