The City of Alpharetta maintains more than 500 lane miles of streets and roads and regularly inspects and rates them to determine maintenance needs. The ratings are assessed in combination with factors such as historical repair, rehabilitation potential, and traffic data to develop a prioritization list that allows the City to make consistent and cost-effective decisions for roadway preservation and resurfacing.
Crews conducted the field analysis of Alpharetta’s streets and roads through the Summer and then analyzed the data. The report on Alpharetta’s street and road conditions was provided to the City on October 20, 2022.
The current health of a road is expressed by a numerical value or grade known as the Pavement Condition Index (PCI), which grades a road on a 0 to 100 scale (on which 100 is a newly paved road). Each road is assigned an average PCI score; however, it is noted that sections of a road may score higher or lower on the PCI scale than the overall average rating of the road. For this reason, resurfacing or maintenance is often performed on sections of larger roads that have lower scores than the overall road average score.
Alpharetta divides its streets and roads into four categories based on the assigned average PCI score:
Good: PCI Score = 75+
Fair: PCI Score = 50 to 74.99
Poor: PCI Score = 25 to 49.99
Very Poor: PCI Score = 0 to 24.99
The average PCI score for every City-maintained street or road is listed in the 2022 Overall Roadway Average PCI Report. It should be noted that the PCI scores listed in the report were calculated after the City had identified roads to be resurfaced under its Fiscal Year 2023 Milling and Resurfacing Budget but before work had begun on those resurfacing projects.
