Alpharetta residents are preparing to bid farewell to the original Wacky World, a beloved playground that has provided fun for families for over 27 years. The wooden structure is nearing the end of its lifespan, and the community is gearing up for another rebuild, creating a more inclusive playground accessible to children of all ages and abilities. As the countdown to construct Wacky World Next Generation begins, children, both young and old, are invited to join the celebration on Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m. in Wills Park. The farewell event will include food trucks, music, games, and an opportunity to claim original pickets.
Wacky World's history began in May of 1997 when the community linked arms to build what is now known as "Alpharetta's favorite playground" in just six days. A total of 2,673 volunteers dedicated their time across 3,000 shifts, generously contributing their skills, money, materials, and services to construct a one-acre playground suitably named Wacky World by the local school children. This collaboration marked a milestone in Alpharetta's history and has provided joy and entertainment for residents ever since.
Inspired by over 175 drawings and ideas from local children, the new Wacky World will include a zipline, new climbing structures, racing slides, and more. To maintain the same look and feel of the original Wacky World, a lumber alternative will be used in the design. The project will be overseen by Play By Design Co. to ensure the playground meets ADA standards and safety guidelines. The new playground will also feature a poured surface and the latest adaptive equipment, ensuring inclusivity for children and parents of all ages and abilities.
Design and construction of the new Wacky World Playground is largely financed by the Parks Bond that Alpharetta voters approved in 2021. A citizens committee is working to advance the project by raising funds to bring additional features and amenities to the facility.
"Thanks to the concepts from our local kids, the new Wacky World will have a fresh, innovative design," said Jeremy Scott, Wacky World Committee Member. “It will be much more inclusive and better for a wide variety of families to enjoy."
"Wacky World has been wonderful for my family, but I'm really looking forward to seeing all my kids playing together on a playground that caters to the evolving needs and interests of the next generation," said, Dana Davis, Wacky World Committee Member. "The addition of accessible equipment means they'll get to enjoy something new, and I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun!"
The anticipated completion of the project in October 2024 emphasizes the essential role of volunteers in making Wacky World Next Generation a reality. In the event of inclement weather, the farewell celebration will be rescheduled to May 5, 2024. Stay updated on any changes by following @WackyWorldPlayground on
