Alpharetta Mayor Pro Tem Dan Merkel has been appointed by Governor Brian Kemp to the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council. The council’s core mission is to provide professionally trained, competent, and ethical firefighters with the proper equipment and facilities, to ensure a fire-safe environment for Georgia’s citizens, and to establish professional standards for fire service training including consulting, testing, and certification.
Mayor Pro Tem Merkel serves as one of 11 members of the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council (GFSTC) and is one of six members who serve by appointment of the Governor.
The GFSTC establishes uniform minimum standards for the training and employment of firefighters, fire and safety educators, fire inspectors and investigators, and other firefighting service professionals and establishes the minimum curriculum requirements for schools training those professionals and firefighter recruits. The council has the power to certify fire service professionals who satisfy and maintain the minimum training standards and to decertify or suspend fire service members who fail to maintain their training standards or for other purposes.
Please join the City of Alpharetta in congratulating Mayor Pro Tem Dan Merkel on his appointment to the GFSTC and thanking him for expanding his public service and leadership beyond Alpharetta to the entire State of Georgia.
