While the annual ban on outdoor burning that covers all of Metro Atlanta went into effect this week, Alpharetta residents are reminded that the outdoor burning of yard waste, trash, or rubbish is prohibited at any time in the City of Alpharetta. Our local ordinance makes such outdoor burning illegal throughout the year and violating that ordinance can bring a $1,000 fine and other penalties.
Alpharetta’s year-round ban on outdoor burning can be found in Section 20-8 of the City Code and specifically prohibits the burning of refuse, rubbish, brush, wood, trash, leaves, tree limbs, or other combustible materials anywhere in the city.
The ordinance also provides exceptions to allow for certain recreational fire pits, grills and fires associated with food preparation, fires associated with the training of fire fighting personnel, and the use of equipment like welding torches and blow torches. To read the full code section, visit
