Local Requirements
Do You Need a Permit or a Limited Work Permit?
A permit is required for sprinkler work that involves 10 or more fire sprinkler heads that are being modified. Less than 10 sprinkler heads only require a Limited Work Permit. See fire permit application section for more information.
A permit is required for fire alarm systems that have 5 or more devices being modified. Less than 5 devices require a Limited Work Permit. See fire permit application section for more information.
All work requires a Letter of Certification upon completion of the project.
Pre-Construction
The General Contractor must fill out and submit a pre-construction acknowledgement form found in the document library or provided to them by the Alpharetta Fire Marshal’s Office. Form may be submitted to FirePlans@alpharetta.ga.us
Knox Boxes
Knox key boxes to be installed in the following locations:
1. Structures or occupancies equipped with fire sprinkler systems.
2. Structures or occupancies equipped with fire alarm systems.
3. Gates which limit emergency vehicle access. Electric gates require a Knoxswitch. Manual gates may use a Knox Padlock.
4. Other locations as deemed appropriate by the Fire Marshal.

All Knox Boxes shall be equipped with an eCore electrical lock.
Fire Department Connection (FDC) CAPS
City of Alpharetta requires locking fire department connection caps per 2018 International Fire Code 312.4.1. Locking caps may be purchased by the same process of purchasing a Knox Box stated above.
IFC-510 (EMERGENCY RESPONDER RADIO COVERAGE) REQUIREMENTS
Emergency responder radio coverage in new buildings shall be in compliance of Section 510 of the 2018 International Fire Code. A preliminary and final report shall be submitted to the Alpharetta Fire Marshal’s Office.
SPRINKLER ORDINANCE
All fire sprinkler systems shall meet Alpharetta Ordinance #220 along with all adopted State codes.
