Council Approves $4.7 Million Road Resurfacing Contract

Released August 26, 2022 03:11 PM

During their August 22 meeting, the Alpharetta City Council approved a $4,720,183 contract for milling and resurfacing approximately 21 lane miles of streets and roads in 39 locations throughout the city.  Approximately $2 million of this year’s annual road resurfacing allocation is funded by proceeds from the Transportation Local Option Sales Tax.

The chosen vendor for the work, Allied Paving Contractors will complete the work between September 2022 and June 2023.

The City of Alpharetta maintains more than 500 lane miles of streets and roads and annually budgets dollars for milling and resurfacing.  The condition of all roads in the city is periodically evaluated and that data along with historical repair, rehabilitation information, and traffic information helps the City make consistent and cost-effective decisions for roadway preservation and resurfacing.  Based on that data, the following road sections will be resurfaced under the recently approved contract:

The original budget for repaving these road sections, calculated in January, was approximately $3.9 million.  Unfortunately, significant price increases for materials and labor drove final costs up by 21%, leaving City Council faced with the decision to remove 15 road sections totaling 5.72 lane miles from the list or drawing roughly $820,000 from the unallocated capital account to close the gap.

Ultimately, it was determined to be in the best interests of the community to fund the repaving of all road sections on the original list.
