FAQs

• Can I pay my fine before my court date?

  Yes. Fines for offenses which do not require an appearance before the judge may be paid before the court date.
  
  

• How can I find out the amount of my fine?

  Ten days after the issuance of your citation, you may call Court Services at 678-297-6250 for the fine amount. Please be aware that there are instances in which fine amounts cannot be determined until your court appearance.

• How do I get to the Alpharetta Municipal Court?

  The court is located in the Milton Public Safety Complex behind fire station 44 on Highway 9. Once you have turned onto School drive, you will pass the first parking lot and continue to the back side of Building B.

  
  
  

• How do I pay my fine?

  Please allow at least ten days from the issue date of the citation before calling for the fine amount or any other information you may need. Notify the Violations Bureau if your address has changed.
  
  If your citation is a payable offense and you wish to pay the fine by mail please do the following:
  
  A. Call the Violations Bureau for the fine amount.
  B. Place the correct fine amount in an envelope, ensuring that you affix the correct postage.
  C. Mail the payment to the address indicated so that we receive it before your court date.

  The following forms of payment are accepted:
  • Cash (in person only)
  • Check (out-of-state or counter checks will not be accepted)
  • Money order
  • Visa, MasterCard, or American Express (all payments made with a card will incur a service fee paid)

• How soon will my case be handled in court that day?

  In general, cases will be processed in the order that they are received by the court when you arrive in court and check in with the Clerk.
  
  

• I am under 21. Are there any special limitations that apply to me?

  Yes. You must either be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian or be insured as the principal policyholder by your auto insurance company in order for your traffic citation to be disposed. Please also note that there are special penalties that apply to driver’s under the age of 21
  
  

• I wish to speak to the Solicitor about my case. What can I do?

  If you wish to speak with the Solicitor, you may do this by appearing in court on your assigned court date and requesting a pre-trial conference when you check in with the court.
  
  

• I have received a subpoena for court. What should I do?

  Please call the Clerk’s office at 678-297-6250 24 hours prior to the court date and confirm the case has not been rescheduled or closed.

  
  
  

• May I get a continuance for my case?

  The judge allows 1 reset per case without having to appear before the court. Please email the court at courts@alpharetta.ga.us to request a new court date.

  
  
  

• What happens if I am late for court?

  The court requests your prompt appearance for scheduled sessions.
  
  

• What happens if I can’t afford an attorney?

  You may request an application for a court appointed attorney. The Municipal Judge will review your request and follow the guidelines issued by the Supreme court of Georgia.

  
  
  

• What happens if I miss my court date?

  If you did not appear on your scheduled court date and time without prior notification, you will be fined for Failure to Appear. This may also result in your driver’s license being suspended and a warrant being issued for your arrest. Please contact the court immediately if you missed your court date.
  
  

• What is a Nolo Contendere plea?

  A Nolo Contendere plea is a form of a guilty plea which does not put any points on your driving record. You may only use a Nolo Contendere once every 5 years. However, please be aware that the offense itself does still appear on your driving record. Also, it is within the Judge’s discretion to grant a Nolo Contendere Plea.
  
  

• What is an arraignment?

  An arraignment is an assigned first court appearance for people accused of violating Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A.) laws or City Ordinances. During an arraignment session, the judge will explain the process by which you may plead to the charge against you, seek help to understand your legal rights, and otherwise dispose of your case. After you check in with the Court Clerk, your name will be called, and you will be asked how you want to proceed with your case. At that point, you will also have the opportunity to request a pre-trial conference with the City Solicitor to discuss your options.
  
  

• What is Super Speeder?

  Georgia's 'Super Speeder Law' defines a Super Speeder as a driver convicted of speeding at 75 mph or more on a two-lane road or at 85 mph and above on any road or highway in the State of Georgia.
  
  In addition to the fines and fees paid to the jurisdiction where the speeding offense took place, a $200 Super Speeder state fee is to be paid by the convicted driver. Failure to pay the Super Speeder fee within 120 days of official notice will result in the suspension of the offender’s license or driving privileges. Payment of a $50 reinstatement fee in addition to the $200 Super Speeder fee will then be required to reinstate their license or driving privileges.

• Which offenses require an appearance before the judge?

  Must Appear Offenses are those for which you are required to appear before the judge. Examples include but are not limited to DUI, Possession of Marijuana, Minor in Possession, Disorderly Conduct, Suspended License, Suspended Registration, No Insurance, Reckless Driving, Aggressive Driving, Speeding 30 mph over the speed limit, all City Ordinance Violations, and all Under 21 Offenses.
  
  

• Why is my trial not conducted on the same day as my arraignment?

  Each court jurisdiction has the prerogative to establish operations in its best judgment that will optimize the use of taxpayer resources, city personnel, and serve the public’s best interest. Due to the fact that arraignments address a large group of people versus a trial which only applies to a small percentage of those arraigned (only those contesting the citation); the Alpharetta Municipal Court views separate sessions as the most expedient alternative.
